Burning Permits

The City of Waukesha Fire Prevention Ordinance prohibits outdoor burning within the City of Waukesha.

Exceptions
There are some exceptions, however, for bonfires, recreational fires, and cooking fires that are allowed by the Fire Department.

Rules for Burning Exceptions
  • A hose or source of water to extinguish the fire must be in place at all times.
  • Only dry, untreated wood may be burned.
  • No trash, refuse, debris, rubbish, garbage, or litter may be burned (this prohibits the burning of yard debris as well, such as leaves, twigs, branches, etc.).
  • No flammable or combustible liquids may be used to start the fire.
  • The fire must be attended by an adult (18 years of age or older) at all times.
  • The "Fire Area" must be a minimum of 25 feet from any buildings.
  • No burning on windy days or when very dry conditions are present.
  • The fire must be completely extinguished at the completion of burning.
